December 4, 2004 Denver, Colorado -- Today General Manager Wazonek pulled the trigger on a deal which saw Kurt Sauer heading to Atlanta. In return, the Avalanche received Andy Sutton and two quality prospects, Jimmy Sharrow and Jim Slater. Andy Sutton, the native of Kingston, Ontario, Canada has appeared in three hundred and one career CPHL games, Sutton has scored seventeen goals, forty-seven assists for sixty-four points and five hundred and sixty-five penalty minutes. Jimmy Sharrow, the native of Framingham, MA was drafted in the fourth round, 110th overall in the 2003 entry draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. Sharrow has appeared in one hundred and twenty-two games with Halifax, of the QMJHL and has scored fourteen goals, forty assists for fifty four points and one hundred and twenty-one penalty minutes. Talent Analysis Sharrow is a highly skilled defenseman. His greatest asset is his skating. He will rush the puck, distributes the puck well on the power play, and has good hockey sense. He also has a valuable right-handed shot. Jim Slater was drafted in the first round, 30th overall in the 2002 draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. Slater has appeared in one hundred and sixteen games with hte Michigan State University and has tallied forty-eight goals, seventy-six assists for one hundred and twenty-four points and has one hundred and fourteen penalty minutes in just three years. A good all-around player with above-average skating and stickhandling ability. Slater is a solid playmaker with good hands and decent shot. He plays a very consistent and hard-working game with a side of grit. He isn't a sniper, but he doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. A centerman, Slater is very effective on the faceoff circle. Although he isn't particularly big, he doesn't avoid traffic, and has very good upper and lower-body strength. "We are very satisfied with this trade. We gain an experienced, leadership and tough defenceman in Sutton and two young prospects who I believe are very good," said Wazonek. |
